Positive Parenting

Are you struggling with the balance of letting go while also providing support to your child?

You may be concerned that your child is simply not ready for adult life. Perhaps they exhibit behaviors that are disruptive to the family unit, ultimately interfering with their success. Yet, instead of being able to respond to these behaviors with the patience or level-headedness you would like to have, you may find that you and your family are growing more and more frustrated exhausted, and overwhelmed.

Positive Parenting is the Solution

Secondary Transition

The process of starting school is your child’s first transition. Their secondary transition is when they finish school to begin their adult life.

Planning ahead with a comprehensive understanding of all the options and how you can best support your child in their new role as an adult living with a disability is a process.

Secondary Transition COnCierge Services includes:

  • Identifying and accessing available government resources and services

  • Exploring employment opportunities

  • Identifying post-secondary education options

  • Review available independent living and housing options

  • Discussing medical decision making

  • Referral and education about legal and financial options

The transition planning process consists of a series of plans that require long-term preparation. Let us guide you through the process.

While these decisions can feel far off, they require attention now, because the impact of these choices will determine the course of the rest of your child's life.

Starting this transition early (we recommend as early as 14) will allow your child to adjust in the most comfortable way possible, affording them the best possible chance at a happy and successful life.

“Claudia has been an integral part of helping both of us and our son prepare for and succeed in his transition to the next chapter of young adulthood. Her confidence in him, and the clearly-laid-out process she helped outline, helped us to feel ready to take the (well prepared) leap to supported living. Our family honestly would not be where we are today without Claudia's invaluable guidance.”

     FAQs

    • Secondary transition planning is the process in which the student, parents, and school begin planning for the transition from secondary education into adulthood. It includes ensuring the school transition program is in alignment with the student and the family's goals. Also, identifying and accessing government and private services to support long-term goals.

    • It is best to start looking and learning about the transition process at least 4 years before a child leaves the school district services, for some that is after 12th grade, and others it is at the age of 22. Schools are mandated to begin transition planning by the age of 16, but often begin at the age of 14.

    • Independent living skills can be hard to learn for individuals who are used to having a lot done for them or who are accustomed to getting prompts. Sometimes, they need families to help them make the transition to independence. Utilizing ABA, I help parents change how they approach their child to provide the opportunity for their child to increase independent living skills

    • My positive parenting services teach parents themselves to be the “therapist” within the home environment. This way, you’re still able to benefit from the skills associated with ABA while balancing the needs and preferences of your family. Positive parenting uses ABA theory to help parents create opportunities for their child to learn skills that will increase their independence in adulthood.

    • I will work with you to review options for independent living and understand how various programs are funded while taking into account your family’s unique situation and hopes for the future. Together, we can determine a plan for Supported Living Services, Independent Living Services, or a group home that works best for your family.
