Presentation Topics
Self-Determination Program
Since Governor Brown Jr. signed into law the Self Determination Program in October 2013, this program has drawn much attention. It is currently in the pilot stage, but in June 2021 it will be available to all Regional Center clients. As a certified Independent Facilitator, who has written many Person Centered Plans and guided clients through this process, I help families understand and prepare to participate in this program when it becomes available.
Secondary Transition Process
The transition from school to adulthood is complicated. Families have described it like falling off a cliff! This is in part because the laws governing services and support change drastically when a student finishes secondary education. There are many new issues that need to be taken into consideration such as independent living, vocation/employment, and financial and legal matters to name a few. My presentation on this subject is sensitive to families’ needs, helping them avoid many pitfalls that can occur when an individual is not well prepared for the transition.
Regional Center Services
While a child is in school, the majority of their services come through the school system, through the IEP. Once a student exits the school system, most of their services will come from the state offices that provide I/DD services. I have developed and managed several adult Regional Center and DOR programs (CA) and help families understand the Regional Center maze. During this presentation I provide families with information on services provided by the Regional Center, but more importantly how to identify services that their child might need and how to access those services.
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)
ABA is an evidence-based intervention that is often provided in a center- or school-based program, utilizing Registered Behavior Technicians (RBT) to teach children new skills and change behavior. In this presentation, I discuss how ABA can be used by parents to parent their child with disability in a positive and proactive manner. Using ABA skills, parents can help their child increase independence, reduce disruptive behavior in the home, and engage in the community with the goal of preparing them to live and work in the community as adults.
